But Peter and John replied, "Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
(Acts 4:19 (NIV))

Too many people believe that they are the final authority on what is right!

Have you ever encountered anyone like this?

And now for the painful question. Have you ever been someone like this?

There is something about human nature that makes us want to be right, that makes us want to be the final authority, that makes us want to be in control. This is the same thing that caused Satan to rebel. He wanted to be God, and all of our problems since the fall from grace are a direct result of this sinful desire.

There is an old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely. We see evidence of this all throughout history. The Sanhedrin was no exception. They were the so called final authority of anything to do with God, only they had become so focused on their power and position that they completely missed what God was doing.

They tried to silence what God was doing!

They had Jesus arrested and crucified.

They had warned Peter and John to stop speaking and teaching in the name of Jesus.

How could they have been so blind?

Didn't they see the miracles? Didn't they see the crucifixion and the resurrection? Didn't they see the power of what the disciples were doing since the ascension of Jesus?

How can someone be so blind and egotistical as to think that they can silence what God is doing? How can someone who professes to be the voice of God completely miss what God is doing right in front of them?

Have you ever been in a situation where someone insisted that you not speak the name of Jesus?

How did you handle that? Did you continue to speak the name of Jesus or did you cower in fear? Did you measure up to Peter and John and do what is right in the eyes of God?

Who are you listening to?

Are you doing what is right?
