Most people-and most businesses-still think of Microsoft Word when it comes to word processing. The .docx file format is universally recognized as the default file format used by Word for résumés and essays, so whomever you're working with probably needs one in return as well.

Web-based word processing
You can use Microsoft Word for free on the web if you have a Microsoft account, but that's also free. Since the app works entirely within a web browser, you can access it from any computer, and your files are always synchronized and saved in the cloud. Word on the Web has some limitations, but it may be the only option for some users.
You can collaborate on documents with other people very easily, and you get all of the basic formatting options of the desktop version of Word. If you use Word on the web, you can create some fairly complex layouts, and you can get some inspiration from the free templates Microsoft provides.
There are no advanced proofing or reference tools available with this online version of Word, and you do not get alignment guides or live layout options. Additionally, you can't create citations and bibliographies, nor can you use advanced proofreading and reference tools. You also need an active internet connection to use the online version. These will not be a dealbreaker for everyone, and Word on the Web is a perfectly capable program.
Mobile Word Apps
Android and iOS versions of Microsoft Word can be downloaded free of charge. In the same way as the web version, the mobile app version of Word only requires a Microsoft account, but there are some caveats: If you want to use it on an Android device with a screen size smaller than 10.1 inches or on an iPad, you need to subscribe to Microsoft 365. There are only cell phones available with the free version.
